North Captiva

This island is a wonderful getaway for a family. Located on Florida's Gulf Coast and part of the barrier islands protecting the Intercoastal Waterway from Port Charlotte down to Fort Myers, others in the chain include beautiful Sanibel and Captiva islands.

Part of the fun is that the only way to get there is via a charter boat from Pine Island. The kids loved the 30 minute trip and is a great introduction to the island and the fun that awaits on the Intercoastal Waterway. As you approach the harbor, you are required to zig-zag through a small and shallow bay followed by a quick left into the small canal.

The beauty of North Captiva is that there are so few people on the island - particularly in the off-season (summer) which makes it seem sometimes as if you have the island to yourself. The southern half of the island is a nature preserve, which we didn't adequately explore, as a result however, there is a significant amount of wildlife on and around the island.

If you go, I highly recommend that you take at least one day and rent a boat for the whole day. Then tour around the various islands - notably Cayo Costa State park on the uninhabited island north of North Captiva. We dropped anchor just off the beach, went shelling and then went to the norther tip on the shipping channel, had lunch and saw a manatee.

My only caution here is that if you have a non-beach front house - you are technically restricted to public beaches of which we could find only two: the state park beach located in the southwest part of the island and the beaches that were at either end of the runway. We didn't really care though, since we spent much of the time lounging by the pool or out on the ocean.

Truly a great place.
